Today Forbes reports that Microsoft will use one or more public blockchain(s) to build a decentralized and secure user identity system. This system will be incorporated into the Microsoft authenticator application and the blockchain technology may be based on some of the currently well functioning examples, such as bitcoin, Litecoin or Ethereum.

This system will be unique in that, due to its decentralized design, it won’t be controlled, nor can it be censored, by any business or government. It will also be unalterable by any third party, and yet allow the user full control of their own ID. All updates to this data will be in the hands of the user. It will enable much better user privacy and will be permissionless, in that users will not need anyone to authorized changing their own data.

As with all things bitcoin-related, scaling with be an issue that must be resolved. A workable system must be able to ultimately handle millions of transactions per second. The solution could be using a system like the bitcoin Lightning network.

Microsoft is not the first to enter this field, but they are will for sure be the proverbial 800 lb gorilla in the room. Will they succeed?
